RESUMEN: El propósito de este artículo es discutir los aspectos geotécnicos que se deben considerar en las distintas etapas de la vida de un relleno sanitario. Bajo este esquema la normatividad mexicana presenta algunas deficiencias. Se describen los aspectos relevantes que contemplan los rellenos sanitarios en sus distintas etapas: diseño, construcción, operación y clausura. Luego se presentan los análisis de una prueba de carga de grandes dimensiones en un relleno sanitario sobre suelos blandos. A partir de estos se proponen aspectos geotécnicos que se deben involucrar en la construcción y operación de rellenos sanitarios sobre suelos blandos. Este artículo proporciona lineamientos para mejorar la práctica de la disposición final de residuos sólido, útiles para los diseñadores, administradores y entidades reguladoras de rellenos sanitarios.
