RESUMEN: En este trabajo se presenta el procedimiento que se siguió para el diseño de una presa de jales que almacenará 70.2 millones de m3 de desechos sólidos: la cortina tendrá una altura de 63 m en su sección máxima y una longitud de 2.85 km y el área inundada, para la condición de mayor altura, será de 203 hectáreas. Se ejecutaron pruebas de campo y laboratorio para caracterizar los jales como el suelo de cimentación. Se proponen tres métodos constructivos y se determinan los factores de seguridad en condiciones estáticas y accidentales por sismo. Finalmente, se propone una instrumentación básica y se dan algunas recomendaciones para la condición de cierre.
