RESUMEN: La capacidad de predicción de la velocidad de onda de cortante (Vs) de tres correlaciones empíricas con propiedades básicas del suelo tales como resistencia al esfuerzo cortante, plasticidad, relación de vacíos, relación de sobreconsolidación (OCR), resistencia de punta del cono (PCPT) y esfuerzos efectivos para arcillas, y datos de columna resonante es verificada. En un sitio en aguas someras las correlaciones empíricas generan una envolvente alrededor de las mediciones in situ de Vs y la mejor estimación es dada por la correlación con la resistencia al esfuerzo cortante. Cuando se aplican a un sitio en aguas profundas se tiene que los valores estimados de Vs caen dentro de una banda muy estrecha de un 10 %. Para los sitios en aguas someras y profundas, las estimaciones de Vs a partir de datos de columna resonante, ajustados por el efecto de envejecimiento utilizando un factor de envejecimiento de 4.0, caen justo dentro de la envolvente generada por las correlaciones empíricas y las mediciones in situ.
