Liquefaction potential study of thickened tailings deposits

RESUMEN: La producción de cobre es una parte esencial de la economía de Chile. Al extraer el cobre, se producen grandes cantidades de relave, los que son generalmente almacenados en tranques de relave. Los depósitos de relave espesado (TTD, Thickened Tailings Disposal) son una alternativa a los depósitos convencionales, en que se extrae gran parte del agua antes de depositarlos, aumentando la capacidad de almacenamiento y la estabilidad sísmica. Una vez que se deposita una capa de relave espesado, ésta pierde agua por desecación, generándose grietas de contracción en la superficie, las que luego se llenan con relave fresco. La respuesta dinámica de una columna representativa de esta estructura compleja formada por bloques “sólidos” con material más blando entremedio fue analizada mediante un modelo unidimensional periódico utilizando elementos finitos, y considerando para el comportamiento del relave un modelo constitutivo elasto-plástico multi-mecanismos. Un aspecto importante de este estudio fue la evaluación del potencial de licuefacción del TTD.
