ABSTRACT: Cutoff walls are commonly used throughout Canada for many applications including groundwater control, dam and levee construction, and environmental barriers. Canada Geo-Solutions (GSI) has installed many cutoff walls in Canada via slurry trenching and other methods for numerous applications and industries. This paper presents lessons learned from those projects and highlights the variety of industries and applications. Lessons discussed include: Slag-CB set curves and variability, the importance of pre-bid/pre-construction Geotechnical Investigations, cutoff wall longevity, and property variation vs depth in self-hardening slurries. In addition, this paper discusses recent trends in cutoff wall installations, including specification of deformation and elastic modulus requirements, minimum/maximum strength criteria, bedrock key requirements, statistical allowances in performance/acceptance criteria, and GUL cement. For each topic a realistic expectation is provided based on the authors’ experiences.
