ABSTRACT: Christchurch experienced a series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. The city is located on alluvial plains formed during the Holocene age, where the general ground conditions comprise predominantly of loose silty sands and shallow groundwater. These conditions caused significant land, infrastructure, and structural damage as a result of liquefaction. Construction guidelines were updated based on observation of liquefaction induced damage, as well as investigations. Government agencies were set up to speed up the rebuild of the city. There are many lessons to learn from Christchurch experience over the last 12 years of studies, investigations, trials, repairs and rebuild.
