ABSTRACT: Five rapid bridge replacements (RBR) were recently completed along Provincial Highway 417 in Ottawa. This construction method involved constructing new bridges on engineered casting beds near their final locations. During a three-day highway closure, the existing bridge is demolished, and the new bridge is moved into place using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) followed by backfilling, paving, and restoring the highway before the scheduled highway opening. At the last bridge replacement at Preston St, two temporary Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls were required to support an elevated travel grade, and were designed to support SPMTs carrying two 2,000-tonne bridges, traveling 0.8 meters from the wall face. This paper presents examines the construction complexities of the RBR operations, highlights the design challenges of the MSE walls, and shares valuable lessons learned.
