ABSTRACT: This paper presents applications of expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam for the protection of underground utilities through three case studies. Two cases involve roadway embankment construction over existing buried sewers. Using EPS geofoam directly reduces the self-weight of the fill on the buried sewer and induces a positive arching effect above sewer, which further reduces the vertical loads on the sewer as well as shear force and bending moment of the sewer. The existing sewers protected by EPS geofoam can accommodate the loads due to new embankment construction. One case involves the use of EPS geofoam as light-weight fill placed on an existing pedestrian tunnel to eliminate additional loads due to new roadway construction. This approach reduced the construction cost such as reinforcing the existing tunnel or installing a structural protection system.
