ABSTRACT: Heat-affected zones (HAZ) created by fusion welding between geomembrane (GMB) panels are known to be vulnerable, as welds are the most common points of failure. Extrusion welding, used where fusion welding is impractical, introduces additional thermal stresses that create double heat-affected zones (DHAZ), potentially increasing the risk of seam failure. Despite this, the effects of extrusion welding on GMB performance remain poorly understood. This study investigates the occurrence of extrusion welds in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) GMB seams using data from three landfill liner systems. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential risk of DHAZ for the long-term reliability of landfill liner systems.
