ABSTRACT: We describe the pipe percussion method for sampling the top few meters of permafrost. Requiring only a few parts, this inexpensive and effective method is also perhaps the simplest to use for permafrost sampling: a steel tube is carefully advanced into the ground and extracted by hand. This method is safe, effective, easily transportable, robust, and works on a wide variety of substrates. Aside from a machined protective cap, all other components are generally available at hardware stores. We describe the limited tooling required, how and where we have used this method, and its strengths and weaknesses.
