ABSTRACT: The Winnipeg Square Parkade, a three-level underground structure located at 360 Main Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was designed and constructed in the mid to late 1970’s. Since construction, the slab on grade floor across the lower level (P3) of the parkade heaved, resulting in reduced vertical clearance for vehicles. In preparation for the opening of the 300 Main Street tower development, the feasibility and risks associated with lowering the P3 parkade slab were assessed and a depressurization system was selected to lower porewater pressures and reduce the risk of basal heave both during and post construction. Four depressurization wells were advanced into the bedrock underlying the parkade. Site constraints required the depressurization wells to be installed from inside the parkade with a limited access drill rig. Implementation of the depressurization system successfully reduced the risk of basal heave, allowing for the parkade slab to be lowered.
