CAPTURING PORE WATER PRESSURE AT THE BASE OF A FAST MOVING LANDSLIDE

ABSTRACT: Landslide mobility is known to be greatly influenced by the presence of water. Basal pore water pressure directly affects the available shear resistance at the interface that influences how fast and far the debris may travel. However, accurate measurements of pore water pressure in landslide flume experiments has proved very challenging due to the high velocity and turbulence of the flow. In this paper we present a review of ten years of landslide flume experiments conducted to elucidate the effect of pore water pressure on landslide mobility, including research to demystify the measurement of basal pore water pressure, and subsequent experiments performed on large monodisperse debris incapable of generating excess pore water pressures. We conclude by identifying next steps, including plans for the investigation of more realistic polydisperse debris flow experiments capable of maintaining excess pore water pressures leading to liquefied debris.


RÉSUMÉ: La mobilité des glissements de terrain sont grandement influencées par la présence de l’eau interstitielle. Elle affecte directment la contrainte de cisaillement à l'interface qui determine la vitesse et distance que les débris peuvent déplacer. Cependant, il est trés difficile de measure la pression de l’eau interstitielle dans des expériences de glissement de terrain en raison de leur grande vitesse et des turbulences. Dans cet article, nous présenterons une revue de dix ans d’expériences de glissement de terrain qui ont été menées pour étudier l’ influencé du l’eau interstitielle sur la mobilité des glissements de terrain. Cela inclut la recherche qui démystifie comment mesurer avec précision la pression de l’eau interstitielle, et les expériences ultérieures effectuées sur de grands débris monodispersés incapables de générer de pression d’eau poreuse excessive. Nous concluons par l’identification des prochaines étapes, y compris des plans pour étudier des expériences de glissement de terrain plus réalistes sur des matériaux polydispersés qui sont capables de maintenir des pressions qui conduisent à la liquéfaction des débris.
