CENTRIFUGE TESTING OF MONOPILE FOUNDATIONS FOR OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES UNDER MONOTONIC AND CYCLIC LATERAL LOADING: INSIGHTS INTO STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE AND STABILITY

ABSTRACT: A series of scaled physical model centrifuge tests were conducted to evaluate the structural performance of standard monopiles (MPs) under monotonic and cyclic loads for offshore wind turbines (OWTs). This study aims to build damage accumulation correlations for MPs installed in clayey sediments for real world applications, and to provide a baseline for future finite element modelling for other site conditions. Model tests were conducted at 50g in over-consolidated (OC) clay beds. The monotonic lateral loading results showed a rigid pile response (bending moments stayed below yield moments throughout the tests) and exhibited no clear peak due to soft soil conditions. One-way cyclic lateral loading tests revealed that the monopile foundations demonstrated a shakedown response under up to 10,000 cycles of fatigue loading, with critical cycle number increasing with increased normalized loading.
