ABSTRACT: Particle size distribution is a key parameter in soil and sediment analysis. Laser diffractometry is increasingly used for its efficiency, but the method is optimized for inorganic samples and requires prior removal of organic matter. This study compared four methods: LOI at 375°C (16h), LOI at 450°C (2h), dissolution with hydrogen peroxide, and no pretreatment on 20 fine-grained samples with < 10% organic matter from permafrost cores in northern Quebec and Manitoba. Analyses were conducted using the Horiba LA-960V2 laser diffractometer. For plastic soils, LOI-treated samples showed significantly reduced clay content compared to untreated and peroxide-treated ones. Result differences between LOI temperatures were minimal. Thermal treatment had no significant effect on grain size distribution of non-plastic soils.
