ABSTRACT: The geotechnical industry has increasingly recognised the importance of ensuring the safety and integrity of tailing and earth dams, following recent catastrophic failures that have caused severe environmental damage, harm to personnel and infrastructure, and risks to downstream populations. Although conventional geophysical methods are commonly used to assess tailing dams, they are typically employed in a reactive manner to address known issues or problems, rather than as proactive monitoring tools. The authors have developed an innovative approach for the geophysical characterisation of tailing and earth dams aimed at proactively ensuring dam safety and integrity. Thanks to the fast-processing capabilities of MASwAI, the high resolution of seismic resonance imaging, and the integration of IoT instrumentation, the authors have developed a combined approach that allows for the installation of permanent instrumentation (geophones, seismic data loggers, and communication relays), to monitor the integrity of earth dams in real-time. Regular imaging of the dam structure can detect any changes or anomalies in the infrastructure. This approach adds significant value to conventional monitoring techniques whether used for annual evaluation or more frequent surveillance of critical areas.
