ABSTRACT: Vibrating Wire Strain Gauges (VWSG) have a long precedence in geotechnical pipeline instrumentation due to their ruggedness, ease of installation and lack of ongoing calibration requirements. This performance review of VWSG in a pipeline Geohazard Management Program in Western Canada examines data collected from over 500 individual gauges at 21 different sites. Individual gauges were assessed for range, installation quality and failure mode. Installation configurations were examined for trends and efficacy of monitoring pipelines during strain relief and long-term monitoring. The discussion will focus on the advantages and limitations of VWSG in a complementary role to other monitoring technologies. Advice will be provided for installation, monitoring frequencies and data interpretation. Additional topics will include VWSG limitations and sources of error.
