Design, Construction and Thermal Monitoring of aLandfill at the FOX-3 DEW Line Site in the Canadian Arctic

RÉSUMÉ: Les sites d'enfouissement existants associés aux opérations historiques ont été assainies et de nouveaux sitesd'enfouissement ont été construits lors du nettoyage du réseau d'alerte avancée (DLCU) du MDN dans l'Arctique canadien.Les installations d'élimination de niveau II étaient de nouvelles décharges conçues et construites pendant le DLCU pourcontenir les sols contaminés dépassant les critères de nettoyage du réseau DEW de niveau II. Cet article présente laconception, la construction et la surveillance thermique à long terme d'une décharge (installation d'élimination de niveauII) sur le site du DLCU FOX-3 (lacs Dewar) sur l'île de Baffin au Nunavut, au Canada. Les données de surveillancethermique recueillies sur la période de sept ans, de septembre 2011 à août 2018, indiquent que la performance thermiquede l'installation d'élimination de niveau II FOX-3 répondait aux critères de conception et était satisfaisante jusqu'en 2018,après l'achèvement de la construction en 2011.

ABSTRACT: The existing landfills associated with historic operations at the sites were remediated and new landfills were constructedduring the DND DEW (Distant Early Warning) Line Clean-Up (DLCU) in the Canadian Arctic. Tier II Disposal Facilities werenew landfills designed and constructed during the DLCU to contain contaminated soil that exceeded the Tier II DEW LineClean Up Criteria. This paper presents the design, construction, and long-term thermal monitoring of a landfill (Tier IIDisposal Facility) at the FOX-3 (Dewar Lakes) DLCU site on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. The thermal monitoringdata in the seven-year period of September 2011 to August 2018 indicates that the thermal performance of the FOX-3 TierII Disposal Facility met the design criteria and was satisfactory through 2018 after the completion of construction in 2011.
