ABSTRACT: During the summer 2023, wildfires were widespread on Northen Québec (Canada). Although Hydro-Québec’s production and transmission assets did not suffer major damage, several operational activities were impacted. In the case of natural rock slopes, the impacts of wildfires are considerable when they are located near infrastructure. Indeed, in June 2023, large blocks of considerable size (over 1 m3) were observed at the foot of the cliff near the road leading to the main dam. To reduce the risk and increase road safety, a temporary protection system composed of shipping containers and concrete blocks was designed. This article discusses the various impacts of wildfires on the rock slopes as well as all the studies carried out leading to the design and implementation of the temporary protection system to mitigate the risk of rockfalls and allow the road to reopen.
